Principal's Message

IGNITING SUCCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS

A message from the principal,

Dear Parents:

The teachers, staff, and administrators of T. J. Elder Middle School are committed to the success of all students. It is our ultimate goal to create a learning environment that allows every student the opportunity to experience success. As a result, the following theme will be adopted to cultivate a rich learning experience for all students: Igniting Success for All.

With the principles of this theme in one hand and our firm commitment to student success in the other, we will work collaboratively with each other, with families, and with outside organizations in order to ensure the success and well-being of each and every Elder Middle School student. Elder Middle School teachers, administration, and staff know well the unique needs of and strengths that define middle school students. We are drawn to middle school teaching because we recognize this is a critical period in the life of a child and share a strong desire to create the kinds of research based educational experiences that will develop in students the ability to read critically, the skill to write with passion and conviction, the habits of mind to think mathematically, the desire to question the world around them, the urge to emerge as artists and musicians, the desire to embody the energy and effort to develop as great competitors in sports and compassion to be productive members of our diverse and global society.

Washington County School District is a school district full of students with great potential and extraordinary talent that ranges from great academic achievement, stellar performances in fine arts to becoming one of the most perennial and competitive sports programs in the state.  A large percentage of this talent is rarely discovered as our students progress through elementary and middle school.  However, as we continue to showcase our great programs, it is important that we maximize our full potential by providing complete and rigorous educational experiences for all of our students.  We will continue this quest as we ignite: instruction, school-wide discipline, buy-in, parent/ community involvement, fine arts, sports, technology, and college and career readiness.

The purpose of this handbook is to provide information about the rules and procedures at Elder Middle School. We know that the first step in holding high expectations for students is to communicate those expectations with clarity. We ask that you take time to review this information with your student and as always, encourage you to contact us if you have any questions, concerns, or information you would like to share with us. We look forward to working with you as we strive to IGNITE the learning process for your child at Elder Middle School.

Sincerely,

Dr. Darryl L. Gilbert
